Prof. Dr. Habil. Of M.D.
Maciej Gawęcki
I am an ophthalmologist with over 20 years of clinical experience. I specialize in ophthalmic surgery, particularly strabismus and cataract operations. For adult strabismus treatment, I use the adjustable suture technique. I also specialize in imaging diagnostics, including fluorescein and indocyanine angiography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and OCT angiography.
I perform intravitreal injections for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vessel occlusions. I also perform various forms of laser therapy, including: in central serous retinopathy (e.g., micropulse laser therapy, photodynamic therapy – PDT), retinal vascular diseases, and glaucoma.
I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Medical University of Gdańsk. I am also a fellow of the European Society of Ophthalmology – I completed an internship at the renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, in the strabismus department. I obtained my second-degree specialization in ophthalmology in 2001, and in the same year, I defended my doctoral thesis titled: “Amblyopia without Strabismus in Clinical Studies”. In 2025, I received the title of Belvedere Professor (nomination dated May 5, 2025).
I began my professional career in 1995 at the Department and Clinic of Eye Diseases, Medical University of Gdańsk. From 2002–2006, I served as Deputy Head of the Ophthalmology Department at the Provincial Integrated Hospital in Elbląg. For 16 years, I headed the Ophthalmology Department at the Specialist Hospital of J.K. Łukowicz in Chojnice. I still perform surgical procedures and consult patients there. Currently, I am the Head of the Ophthalmology Department at the Specialist Hospital of F. Ceynowa in Wejherowo.
Since 2014, I have served as the Provincial Consultant in Ophthalmology for the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSCR)
Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is a relatively common condition affecting young and professionally active individuals. Men significantly outnumber women in the patient group. In approximately 15% of cases, CSCR presents as a chronic and recurrent form, the treatment of which poses a therapeutic challenge. For years, I have specialized in the treatment and care of patients with CSCR. In the therapy for this condition, I utilize various forms of laser therapy, including non-damaging retinal micropulse laser therapy at 577nm and 810nm, and photodynamic therapy, which provides the best morphological and functional results. According to contemporary research and recommendations, rapid initiation of treatment is particularly important, especially in patients with complicated forms of CSCR.
